District 5 covers approximately 50% of the land area of Howard County. It includes areas such as Highland, Woodbine, Glenwood, Mt. Airy, Woodstock, Cooksville, West Friendship, Dayton, Glenelg and parts of Ellicott City, Clarksville, Marriottsville, and Sykesville.

Agriculture Community
The majority of the rural west is in District 5, distinguished by its beautiful, open areas, land preservation and rich agricultural heritage. The combination of rural charm and the conveniences of nearby shopping, restaurants and events offers unique draws, not just to county residents, but to visitors from the region and beyond.
Fun Facts
Poplar Springs
Poplar Springs in western Howard County served as a temporary home for travelers headed west in the 1800s. The spring water was believed to have healing powers.
23,200 acres
Howard County has preserved over 23,200 acres of farmland in the Rural West over the last 40 years.
Resort Town
The founder of Lisbon, Caleb Pancoast, subdivided the town in 1822 into 100 quarter acre lots, complete with roads and alleys. The town became known as a summer resort for city dwellers. Today it is home to equine rescue farms and the annual Lisbon Horse Parade.
Agriculture
Adam Shipley, the official first settler in Howard County in 1687, planted tobacco crops on the land he owned. Agriculture is the 5th largest economic driver in Maryland.
